Parabolic Arc reported that The Space Studies Institute, a leader in the new space movement, has moved from Princeton, NJ to it's new base in Mojave, California. While reading the article I wondered what was so great about Mojave, California. Why would such a organization make the huge effort to move thousands of miles. After looking into this seemly useless desert I found the silicon valley of the space movement.
Mojave is the home of Scaled Composites LLC, the creator of SpaceShipOne and the winner of the X-Prize. But, there is a buzz in this community. Mojave, in addition to Scaled Composites and Virgin Galactic, is home to the following companies:
Rotary Rocket, Inc. - Developers of the helicopter to orbit concept began Mojave's transformation into a hub for space travel. The company no longer exists
XCOR Aerospace – Out of the ashes of Rotary Rocket, Inc. this company was formed. This company created the Lynx rocketplane, capable of taking one pilot and one passenger to sub-orbital space are well as other atmospheric aircraft.
Interorbital Systems – A aerospace company that is unique because of it's pursuit of a multiday- orbital space tourism flight.
Orbital Sciences Corporation – Who can resupply the International Space Station and launch satellites to orbit.
Masten Space Systems – Who is developing a vertical launch system.
But, to top it all off, Mojave, California is home to the Mojave Air & Space Port. Test site of notable spacecraft like the WhiteKnight.
