So, last night I locked my key in my room. After cursing at myself, I asked one of my floor mates to help. He told me where to go and what to do. I was able go to the hospitality desk, fill out a form, get a copy of my key, unlock my room and return the copy in under 15 minutes. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly. It was almost like they were waiting to help me.
During orientation we went over all the resources this college has to help us through troubling times. I swear, this school has a department or office for every conceivable problem in an undergrad’s life. This make the already stressful experience of being away from home less stressful. This way I can focus on my work on contributing to the community.
My focus level would be more important on a space habitat. Space is already stressful, anything that can make the life of a space inhabitant easier would increase safety and productivity. So, I think a space habitat should be like a college campus in that their is someone to help with every problem in a quick and easy way. Outside of this school, I would have to produce ID. If I didn’t have that I would need a utility bill or a lease agreement with landlord verification. And I would have to pay a locksmith to get me in. Columbia took care of me for free*. It made everything so much easier and I was able to have enough free time to explore. But, when classes start, I would need that time to do more work. So will a space inhabitant.
This is why mission control must at least be prepared to deal with every single possible problem. But, it will make everything a lot more expensive.
*It’s not free, it’s included.

-Do people who live in space really need support for every aspect of life?
