There are two Submissions are from Astroblog. The first article, Music, Moons and a Partial Eclipse, has this blogger running around and spreading the news about an upcoming lunar eclipse during a school concert night. The question is, will he have time after going to a restaurant to set up his cameras and record this event. Check out his blog to find out whether or not he got the shot and to read his other submission where he shares his knowledge about photographing the light reflected off of Iridium communication satellites.
Next up, we have the Urban Astronomer who tries to find what event caused the Star of Bethlehem. Was it a comet, a supernova, a planetary conjunction or divine intervention. You'll have to check out the article to find out!
The people who are lucky enough to operate the Chandra telescope have found a recoiling black hole. Basically, they saw a galaxy with multiple blackholes with one of the blackholes getting slung out of the galaxy at high speed. Nice work guys!!!
Celebrate Space History
FlyingSinger visits the Space City, an epic space museum. They have a full mock up of the MIR space station, stunning even this veteran space cadet with its size. Go forth to his site, and experience the epic.
The ninja reporters at Collect Space have documented the delivery of a Gemini-Titan rocket to NASA's Johnson Space Center, completing the story of local involvement in space told through the many rockets displayed. However, this rocket has suffered damage and, because it is so rare, will take some effort to fix everything. Check out the site to find out how the rocket is doing.
With the shuttle program winding down, The author of Cheap Astronomy and the senior editor of Universe Today reminiscence about their favorite shuttle missions. They recall the greatest moments and the times when they had to bite their nails. Take a trip down memory road, check out this interview!!
Space Cadets Who Ponder about the Future
Of course, to get to the future, we need to manage to survive and that will take a ton of energy. With oil running out, Next Big Future alerts us to a method to create nuclear energy by firing a diamond bullet into a methane crystal, overcoming many of the problems with fusion energy. Read the article if you want to learn more about this game changing technology.
Ever if we deal with our energy needs, an alien invasion will basically alienate the human race. The blogger at Weird Sciences gives ways the human race can survive, from an AI to rebuild after everything is gone to establishing stealthy space colonies, where there is a will, there is a way. Read the article, it could save your life if scifi becomes real.
The most realistic threat from space is not a bunch of aliens, but asteroids. However, just like the movies, we could just nuke the problem away. Can't we?... But would it work? Won't it just create smaller pieces of flaming death! Read about the asteroid nuke simulation over at Next Big Future!
Unfortunately, space won't be like the movies, the Rocket Scientist explains all the contradictions with physics most scifis have.

Maybe all the political drama would go away if those politicians experienced the Overview effect, a feeling of insignificance when viewing the planet from a far. A Babe in the Universe brings us the awe-inspiring picture of the Earth, viewed from mars. It is an amazing picture.
But it will take more than exploitable materials to settle a planet, we will need water, warmth and food. The Space Writer takes a look at our closest neighbors, Mars and Venus, to see if life could have survived on those planets.
Of course, we can't stay in this solar system, that are really cool things else where in the universe. Yet, they are so far away. Traveling faster than the speed of light could allow us to explore other system, but it could cause weird paradoxes with the flow of time itself... or so we thought, Weird Sciences shows us that the paradoxes might not exist.
But, we will need to see where we are warping off to. Crowlspace discusses the technology being used to map Pluto that could be useful in mapping exoplanets.
Centauri Dreams gets down to the dollars and cents, mapping out how long and how much money it will take to build an interstellar starship. It is not as long or as much as you think, learn how close we are by reading their submission.
The Armagh Planetarium Blog reports on all the cool things we would have achieved all these epic things if funding for NASA wasn't slashed in the 70's, check out this submission to read about the creative projects NASA engineers dreamed up.

Almost done! I would like to spotlight 3 organizations. The AIAA Design Build Fly is a really amazing aerospace competition for undergrads, I had a lot of fun participating in the event and, after talking with them, I believe all the participants are the next set of aeronautics leaders. Leave? How?
But something bugged me after reading it. The author wrote this as a call to action, asking the space community to answer the question “how do we leave?”. The more I thought about it, the bigger the question seemed to be...
Let's ignore the gravity issues, the life support issues and the cosmic radiation. We have a society, a way of life that can not come close to supporting a spacefaring society. We have key terms to this field like astronomy, space, NASA and ISS either going down in popularity on Google or staying relatively the same, leading more support to Oscar Wilde's famous quote “we're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”. But this is a problem, we need more people to look at the stars. If people are too tired to look up, if they have their sense of wonder blow out by working on the treadmills, the space cadets all look insane because so many of our arguments for space rely on the wonder of space. For any of those arguments to work, people have to feel the emotion of looking at a star.
But, that emotion is truly lost. I remember watching a shuttle launch on SpaceVidCast, the only reporter in the NASA press room was the SpaceVidCast crew. Developing a space faring society where rocket launches reported on with as much passion as Paris Hilton getting drunk will take time. It will take time to improve our education enough so that we can support a space based-economy. It will take time to increase the world's safety and strength the world's economy enough so that every human has the time to think about and the money to invest in leaving. But that is what answering how brings us, a path to fix all the societal and technical issues that are preventing space habitation.
This is what makes each shuttle mission, each and every rocket launch is significant. Each launch brings us closer to having the ability to leave, each action we take on the path toward becoming spacefaring slowly dissolves the obstacles the stand on that path. The shuttle mission that the press basically ignored, for example, built up the International Space Station (ISS). This build up allows us to answer the questions we need to answer in order to make a bigger space station which will lead to a moon base then a Mars base and so on. Each launch to the ISS builds up the international trust and cooperation we will need to succeed in space and avoid blowing this planet up into itty bitty, radioactive pieces. So, if we get the public to realize which parts of the answer to “how do we leave the planet” each rocket launch provides, then it will be easy to engage the public.
Answering how is where the Apollo program failed. In my limited knowledge of space history, (I really need to read a book about the Apollo program. My only experience with the history of Apollo is Wikipedia and the impressions I get from other blogs. So be warned and be critical.) Apollo was geared to be a short-term project. This nation went from investing almost nothing into space to pouring money into NASA like there was no tomorrow. After we planted the US flag on the moon, interest drifted and NASA's funding got slashed even though people at NASA where trying to do really cool, neat things (like settling space). But NASA, at the time, was focused on where to go. When they got to that place, the moon, it was mission complete. However, I feel that if Apollo was focused on how do we leave the Earth, it would have never ended, it would have just evolved.
Asking the question Mr. Lester asks prepares us for the long-term dedication becoming a spacefaring society will take. We need to speed of the Apollo program, yes. But what we need more is a slow build up to that speed that will make the Apollo level investment and activity sustainable. Focusing on leaving the planet Earth, always keeping that mission in mind, will inject a long-term viewpoint into the space community. A viewpoint which is key to achieving our dream.

How Fresh is the Field: An Initial Look
I want to look at every database I have access to and generate a list of every article I can field that is directly related to space settlement and articles where the author claims the paper be applied to space habitation. I also will include books on the field in the list. But, before I do that, I want to see if there is any value in doing this. So, I did a smaller version of the massive study I want to do.
I went to Google Scholar and ran a search for "Space Settlement". Out of the 500 articles found, 161 seemed to be related to this field after reading the abstract. I looked at the date of publishing, not the date it was written. Now, I know this isn't a random sample, the term space settlement could be more popular in our politically correct age then in the past and Google may only find newer articles. But, if, despite all those reasons for the data set to be made of mostly articles that are older then 1989, I find that most articles are that old, then I have a very strong reason to think most of the articles on space settlement are old.
Here's what I found:
In math speak:
The average is 1997.75
The median is 2002
The first quartile is 1990
The third quartile is 2006.25
But, all in all, it looks like this study, if fully done, could prove that the space settlement field is expanding. One of the things I think that helped accelerate research into space settlement is the growing fields of astrosociology and space law; I ran into tons of those articles in those two fields and they were newer. It would be worth looking into how much those fields make up for the academic work on space habitation.
So, I turn it over to you, the readers. Did you see any errors in the way I put this together? Do you think it is worth doing?

A Reverse Doomsday Clock
I remember watching a discovery special about the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock and this clock has stayed in my mind for a while. Don't freak out, they aren't mad scientists, they are making a political statement with this clock. They respond to events that threaten the species as a whole by moving the clock forward or back. They manage to put the little steps, taken over a long period of time, that lead to nuclear war or extinction into perspective. To think that our decisions managed to accelerated us 11 minutes closer to midnight, the symbolic time of doom, over the last 15 years is stunning. I'm sure this stunning image had some effect on the decisions world leaders made. I feel the space community could use its own clock; we need a reverse doomsday clock.
Imagine what the impact would be if a panel of the most respected people in the space community collectively decided that we are 2 seconds further away from the take off of a space faring society. We would have an icon to show how pleased or displeased the space community is with the development of space. This icon would include the non-space cadets in our highly technical, acronym filled discussions; it would be an icon best suited for the sound bites that media craves.
Another benefit is that the space community will be forced to have debates every time we have to move the clock. While this could involve sticky issues, like Obama's plan for space, a detailed exploration of issues that split the community could help to bring us all to the same page and help to discover all the consequences (both good and bad) of making a certain choice on the path towards space development and space settlement.
So, that's why I think we need the clock. Feel free to challenge me or add more benefits in the comments

TED Friday: Why Space Habitation Efforts Should Be Throttled Down
The arguments for space habitation imply that humanity must leave this planet at break neck speeds. Space settlement is presented as a window, as an opportunity that can be missed. Supporters mention the varies ways we can go extinct as a reason we should move to space, whether from nuclear war or from a massive object smashing into earth, all of which are time sensitive. Still more urgency creeps in when dwindling resources are noted. This gives those working the field a huge adrenaline rush, it feels like they are working against an unseen clock. Is this attitude healthy? Does urgency make the settlement of space go faster?
In his lecture, Carl Honore examines the speediness of modern life. He reveals that, before he became an advocate of the Slow Movement, he wished that he could speed up his interactions with his son. However, after some deep thought, he realized that his speed was damaging his relationship with his son. Wondering what was the cause of this culture is, he realized that “[i]n other cultures, time is cyclical. It's seen as moving in great unhurried circles. It's always renewing and refreshing itself. Whereas in the West, time is linear. It's a finite resource, it's always draining away”. This causes time to have a much inflated value making us to jam every second with an activity. This might feel like the only way, but it isn’t as Honore proves when he cites economies, such as those in “Nordic countries”, who move slowly yet do well. That, among other examples, lead to his thesis that it is possible to get things done faster then ASAP, but completing work this quickly produces low quality work. In short, he claims it is possible for “good slow” to exist.
Just as Honore, I must concede and say “that there is such a thing as ‘bad slow’. [For example, Honore] got stuck on the M25, which is a ring road around London …and spent three and a half hours there…that's really bad slow.”. It’s really bad slow when we do not fix out failing schools for years. It is really bad slow when telescopes aren’t being built fast enough to provide the ability to look for objects that can threaten us. It is really bad slow if research in the space and STEM field were to stop. Not having rapid prototyping machines is bad slow. Having to place a hold on a project because the funding was cut is bad slow.
But, do we have to generate progress towards space habitation every second of everyday? I believe the answer is no based on my experience with this blog. What motivated me to post an article everyday was my belief that I needed to generate content to, somehow, help humanity reach the next Maslow Window- a period when space habitation is fundable- before it closes. These need to post by midnight every night lead to horrible posts, writing that did nothing to further the field. If I took this attitude into the industry, I would have produced low quality parts/designs, and I would have burned out sooner or later. However, when I’ve allowed a blog post two or three days in development time I tend to produce posts which I’m most proud of, posts which I know are convincing people and furthering the field because of the reaction I see on social media.
Here’s where I take the pervious paragraph and toss it into my generalization machine. If the urgency I see in space settlement works is replicated in technical works towards space settlement, we have a problem. I don’t work in the aerospace industry, so I have no clue about the culture of NASA, Boeing and other space organizations. But, if those people think we need to progress every second, they will go slower. Once again, it is faster to go as slow as one needs to in order to preserve quality. I point to Apollo as an example of what happens to a program whose main design consideration is a speedy development. The program burnt out in a relatively short time. In short, it is better to wait for the next train to the future instead of sprinting on foot towards it.
Yes, this strategy could delay space habitation, but the Apollo model of space development, the draining bayonet charge to a space faring society doesn’t work in the long term. Yes, we could miss the windows we need to reach for space development. However, if one were to look at these windows as cyclical objects, one would find that humanity still has a chance if we miss a window. But, if we keep having Apollo style bursts into space, the humanity’s chances are greatly reduced because each window is wasted. It is better to miss one window to jump cleanly out of the next.

The Space Community and Increasing Ecocentrism
While I was reading the paper I reviewed in the last edition of Sunday Paper Club, I realized we might have to deal with another obstacle to space habitation. This obstacle is so big that I can say without any doubt that engineering development is not a substantial obstacle to space habitation when in comparison to the following two.
Thinkers like Gerard O'Neill, Ted Taylor, G. Harry Stine, Edward Gilfillan and many others have warned that a space faring society can destroy themselves. This idea is presented as a solution to the Fermi paradox. But, such a society will be presented with challenges like war, disease and pollution long before they are tested on their ability not to hit the big red button.
Before the nukes go flying, humanity will be increasing spiteful of technology and of engineering. People will become more and more ecocentric, longing to rid themselves of the technology that seems to have caused so much suffering. So, as a society becomes more and more spacefaring, becomes more and more capably of destroy its self, its people will fight against technological advance. Consequently, the closer we get to pulling off space settlement, the hard it will be to convince people to move to the next step and the more likely we are to blow ourselves up. We may just be too tired for the victory party.

-As the environment decays in the future, people will be come more opposed to technological progress, including space habitation.

-I assumed that a spacefaring society has to pollute, is it possible to become space faring without any pollutions (If we could start over, could we inhabit Mars without the use of hydrocarbons?)
